New Year’s Eve (2011), an American romantic comedy directed by Garry Marshall and written by Katherine Fugate, tells interconnected stories of people facing various issues on this special night. As the Vice-President of Times Square, Claire Morgan is busy with final preparations for the ball drop, assisted by her friend and police officer Brendan. Meanwhile, Ingrid Withers, an employee at Ahern Records who was almost hit by a car and denied a vacation, decides to quit her job. She offers deliveryman Paul Doyle tickets to the Ahern Records Masquerade Ball if he helps her accomplish all her New Year’s resolutions before midnight – an offer he happily accepts. On the other hand, Kim Doyle, Paul’s older sister, is dealing with her own problems as she struggles to connect with her teenage daughter Hailey. While Hailey wants to ring in the New Year with friends and boyfriend Seth Anderson in Times Square, Kim longs to spend it with her daughter after going through a divorce.
Paul’s close friend, comic book artist Randy, despises New Year’s Eve due to his recent breakup with his girlfriend. He ends up trapped in an elevator with Elise, a budding singer who is performing backup for musician Daniel Jensen at his Times Square show. Jensen, meanwhile, is also getting ready to take the stage at the Ahern Records ball and trying to reconcile with his ex-fiancée, Laura. Elsewhere, at a nearby hospital, Claire’s father Stan Harris is spending his final moments with Nurses Aimee and Mindy by his side. Despite their doctor’s grim prognosis that he won’t make it much longer, Stan remains determined to stay alive long enough to see the ball drop one last time. In the same hospital, a young couple named Griffin and Tess Byrne anticipate the arrival of their first child and compete with another couple, James and Grace Schwab, for a bonus prize awarded to the family of the first baby born in the New Year.
