New York, New York (1977)
The film New York, New York (1977), directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Earl Mac Rauch and Mardik Martin, features a lively celebration in a NYC nightclub on V-J Day. The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra is supplying the music as smooth-talking saxophonist Jimmy Doyle meets USO singer Francine Evans. Despite Jimmy’s persistence, Francine remains uninterested in him. However, their paths cross again the next morning when they share a cab to an audition. A disagreement with the club owner threatens to ruin the audition, but Francine saves the day by singing ‘You Brought a New Kind of Love to Me’, joined by Jimmy on his saxophone. Surprisingly, they are both offered a job as a traveling act.
Following Jimmy and Francine’s deepening relationship, they face challenges such as Jimmy’s habit of fighting with colleagues, his theatrics, and escalating arguments with Francine, who becomes pregnant. A particularly intense argument leads to Francine going into labor and being rushed to the hospital, where she gives birth to a son. Despite her hopes for a devoted husband and father in Jimmy, he abandons them both upon leaving the hospital. In the future, Francine records a chart-topping song titled ‘But the World Goes Round’ in a recording studio and gains fame as an entertainer. In the years that follow, Jimmy also finds success in music as a renowned jazz musician and club owner, while Francine becomes a successful singer and film actress.
