Nick of Time (1995)
Nick of Time (1995), an American political action thriller film produced and directed by John Badham, follows the story of Gene Watson – a mild-mannered, separated and widowed accountant who arrives with his daughter Lynn at Union Station in Los Angeles. While Gene tries to make a pay phone call informing an unknown person about his delayed train, two mysterious strangers in suits – Mr. Smith and Ms. Jones – observe the station from a catwalk. They are discussing a yet-to-be-revealed plan. Soon, they notice Gene standing up against a skater who was bothering his daughter. Focusing their attention on Gene, Smith and Jones quickly approach the duo. Brandishing a badge, the strangers convince Gene that they are police officers and whisk him and his daughter into their van without justification.
Upon entering the vehicle, Gene immediately senses something is amiss and becomes anxious. However, his worries are interrupted as Smith suddenly strikes him in the leg with a pistol, commanding his attention. It is then revealed that Gene’s daughter’s life is at stake and will be taken if he does not comply with Smith’s demand to murder a woman in a photograph. As Gene pieces together the gravity of the situation, he realizes that the target is none other than Eleanor Grant – the governor of California – and understands the perilous nature of this task. Upon arriving at the Bonaventure Hotel, where multiple campaign events are underway, Gene desperately tries to inform others of his predicament. Yet, Smith relentlessly trails him, harassing and violently assaulting him whenever he hesitates.
