Night Shift (1982), an American comedy film directed by Ron Howard, tells the story of Charles ‘Chuck’ Lumley. Once a successful stockbroker, he now works as an attendant at a New York City morgue to escape the stress of Wall Street. However, his new role as night-shift supervisor, which was given to him in order to make room for his boss’ nephew Leonard, is not something he is pleased with. Adding to Chuck’s frustration is the exuberance of his co-worker Bill ‘Blaze’ Blazejowski. With inspiration from their neighbor Belinda, a prostitute, Chuck and Bill decide to use Chuck’s financial skills and Bill’s entrepreneurial spirit to start a prostitution service out of the morgue. As Chuck falls in love with Belinda, their relationship becomes complicated when she refuses to leave her profession. Despite his feelings for her, Chuck’s passivity prevents him from expressing them.

Meanwhile, their business venture attracts the attention of dangerous pimps who come to the morgue and threaten Chuck’s life. Inadvertently, Bill brings two undercover police officers to the morgue where Chuck is being attacked by the pimps. As a result, a shootout ensues and both Chuck and Bill are rescued. However, they are subsequently arrested for promoting prostitution. Due to potential political shame, they are offered their previous jobs and all charges dropped. While Chuck accepts this offer, Bill sees it as an opportunity to negotiate with the mayor’s office. This leads to a disagreement between the two friends and they go their separate ways. As a result of their fight, Charlotte ends her engagement with Chuck. Later on, in the hallway of their apartment building, Chuck encounters Belinda but once again fails to express his true feelings for her.
