The following tale, The Road Virus Heads North (5), features a celebrated writer who realizes that the demonic figure in his newly acquired painting is changing to match his own journey down a stretch of road. In The Fifth Quarter (6), an ex-convict embarks on a risky search for treasure, endangering his family’s safety.
