Nights in Rodanthe (2008) is a heartfelt American romantic drama based on Nicholas Sparks’ 2002 novel of the same title. The story follows Adrienne Willis, who is going through a divorce with her husband Jack, after he left her for another woman. This has caused tension between Adrienne and their teenage daughter Amanda. During a weekend visit to pick up their children, Jack confesses his love for Adrienne and asks to reconcile. However, she needs time and space to think, so she heads to Rodanthe, North Carolina to take care of a friend’s beachfront bed-and-breakfast for a few days. The only other guest is surgeon Paul Flanner, who is struggling with painful memories from a surgery gone wrong and is dealing with legal trouble from the patient’s family. As a storm approaches, Paul and Adrienne work together to protect the inn while also bonding over meals and sharing personal experiences. Eventually, they find solace in each other’s company.
A true love story begins and they fall deeply for each other. Heedful of Adrienne’s guidance and encouragement, Paul gains the bravery to visit the widowed husband of his deceased patient. Additionally, he bears a sense of remorse for choosing his career over developing a relationship with his son Mark. Determined to reconcile, Paul plans to journey to Ecuador where Mark serves as a physician in an underprivileged community. During their time apart, Adrienne and Paul exchange numerous letters expressing their yearning to be reunited. On the evening when they are finally meant to see each other again, Paul does not appear. Shortly thereafter, Mark arrives at Adrienne’s door carrying a parcel filled with Paul’s personal belongings. Tragically, he perished in a sudden mudslide while attempting to save much-needed medical supplies.
