Nikita (2010 — 2013)
From September 9, 2010, to December 27, 2013, Nikita (2010–2013) aired on The CW as an action thriller drama. The series is an adaptation of Luc Besson’s French film La Femme Nikita, the second such adaptation following the 1997 TV series La Femme Nikita. The show centers on Nikita Mears, a woman who fled from Division, a covert U.S. government-funded organization. After being in hiding for three years, she returns with the goal of taking down the corrupt agency. Oversight, the governing body behind Division’s operations, authorized black ops including espionage, sabotage, and targeted killings. The organization was led by its first director and co-founder, Percival ‘Percy’ Rose, but has since gone rogue and now carries out unauthorized assassinations for profit. To safeguard himself against repercussions, Percy has created secure ‘black boxes’, which hold evidence of all of Division’s past actions as leverage against Oversight. These valuable assets are dispersed worldwide and heavily guarded by top-ranking agents known as Guardians.
Division primarily fills its ranks by recruiting young individuals with troubled pasts, often straight from prison. These recruits are then falsified to have passed away, their previous identities erased, and trained to become proficient spies and assassins. Once recruited, they are obligated to remain with the agency. If their performance is deemed inadequate, recruits face being ‘cancelled’ or terminated. As a precaution, Division implants tracking devices and kill chips into each recruit. Nikita was once a deeply distressed teenager on death row when recruited by Division. They faked her death, saved her from her troubled past, and presented her with an opportunity for redemption while serving her country.
