Nixon (1995)
Oliver Stone’s American epic historical drama film, Nixon (1995), follows the events of the Watergate scandal. In 1972, members of the White House Plumbers break into The Watergate and are arrested. A year and a half later, Richard Nixon’s Chief of Staff, Alexander Haig, provides Nixon with audio tapes regarding the scandal. As they discuss the chaos that ensued from Watergate and the passing of J. Edgar Hoover, Nixon expresses his anger towards John Dean, James McCord, and others involved in the scandal. He even questions why he has not been given a pistol to end his own life like an honorable soldier. Most of the movie is depicted through flashbacks from Nixon’s tapes.
In the film, Nixon activates the taping system, triggering a series of flashbacks. The first takes place on June 23, 1972 in a meeting with H. R. Haldeman, John Ehrlichman and Dean, about a week after the break-in. After Ehrlichman and Dean depart, Nixon shares the ‘smoking gun’ tape with Haldeman. Henry Kissinger plays a significant role throughout the film, initially as a respected professor and later as National Security Adviser and Secretary of State. A constant struggle arises between Nixon and his team regarding Kissinger’s true loyalty—is he a leaker more concerned with his image in the media or a devoted follower of the president’s commands?
