Nomadland (2020)

Nomadland (2020), an American drama, showcases Chloé Zhao’s talents as writer, producer, editor and director. Jessica Bruder’s book Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century inspired the film. In 2011, Fern loses her job at the US Gypsum plant in Empire, Nevada after it shuts down. She had been working there for years with her husband who recently passed away. To embark on a new journey, Fern sells most of her belongings and buys a van to travel the country in search of work. Eventually, she lands a seasonal job at an Amazon fulfillment center during the winter. A co-worker and friend named Linda invites Fern to Bob Wells’ desert rendezvous in Arizona where nomads come together to support each other. Despite initially declining the invitation, Fern eventually changes her mind as cold weather sets in and finding work becomes difficult. At the rendezvous, Fern meets other nomads and learns essential survival skills for life on the road.
After a tire on Fern’s van blows out, she turns to Swankie, a fellow nomad in the area, for a ride into town to purchase a new one. Swankie scolds Fern for her lack of preparedness but also offers to teach her important survival skills while they travel together. Over time, they develop a strong friendship. Eventually, Swankie opens up to Fern about her ongoing battle with cancer and her decision to make the most of her remaining time on the road instead of being confined to a hospital bed. Eventually, their paths diverge and Fern finds work as a camp host at Cedar Pass Campgrounds in Badlands National Park. It turns out that Dave, whom she had met and danced with at a desert community, is also working there. When Dave falls ill with diverticulitis and undergoes emergency surgery, Fern visits him in the hospital. In need of employment after his recovery, they both end up taking jobs at Wall Drug in South Dakota.
