Norma Rae (1979)
Norma Rae (1979) an American drama directed by Martin Ritt, follows the story of a worker in a cotton mill. Despite the negative impact on her family’s health, Norma refuses to turn a blind eye to the poor working conditions. As a single mother with two children from different fathers (one deceased and the other neglectful), she often engages in flings to combat feelings of loneliness and boredom. Initially, management attempts to pacify her frequent protests by promoting her to ‘spot checker’, where she is responsible for monitoring work quotas. Though hesitant, she accepts the position for the higher pay. However, when her fellow colleagues (including her father) view her as a ‘fink’ for aiding management, she demands to be dismissed.
Instead of being fired, Norma is demoted back to the line. Norma Rae’s perspective changes when two men enter her life. Sonny Webster, a former co-worker who had previously caused trouble for her at the mill, asks her out. Despite his previous behavior, Norma Rae accepts his proposal of marriage after a brief courtship. She recognizes that it has been a long time since she has met a selfless man to spend time with. On the other hand, Reuben Warshowsky, a union organizer from New York City, also enters her life and inspires her to join the effort to unionize her shop after delivering a powerful speech. This decision causes tension with Sonny, who notices that she is spending less time at home and is constantly exhausted when she is there.
