North by Northwest (1959) is an American spy thriller film produced and directed by Alfred Hitchcock. In New York City the following year, a waiter at the Plaza Hotel’s Oak Room restaurant is asked by some thugs to page George Kaplan. Meanwhile, advertising executive Roger Thornhill calls over the same waiter and is mistakenly abducted as they believe he is Kaplan. He is then taken to Lester Townsend’s estate in Glen Cove where he is questioned by Phillip Vandamm, a Cold War spy working against the United States who is posing as Townsend. Vandamm orchestrates Thornhill’s supposed death in a staged drunk-driving accident. Although Thornhill survives, he struggles to convince anyone of what really happened – not even his mother or the police.

When he returns to the estate, he discovers that Townsend is actually a United Nations diplomat. Trying to gather more information, Thornhill and his mother visit Kaplan’s hotel room at the Plaza, only for the thugs to follow them and begin their pursuit. Desperate for answers, Thornhill heads to the U.N. General Assembly Building where he finally comes face-to-face with Townsend and realizes that Vandamm has been deceiving everyone all along. As Townsend falls to the ground after being fatally struck by a knife from one of the attackers, Thornhill rushes to catch him. The resulting photo appears to show Thornhill as the culprit, and he flees in search of the real Kaplan. The ‘United States Intelligence Agency’ eventually recognizes that Thornhill has been mistaken for Kaplan.
