Not Okay (2022)
Not Okay (2022) is an American satirical black comedy-drama film written and directed by Quinn Shephard. The protagonist, Danni Sanders, is an aspiring writer employed as a photo editor at Depravity, an online magazine based in New York City. Struggling with her job and social life, Danni turns to her co-worker and social media influencer Colin for some inspiration after getting high on one of his hits. In an effort to impress him, she fabricates attending a writers’ retreat in Paris and spends the following week posting doctored photos of herself from her Brooklyn apartment. To add to the charade, she even creates a website for the fake retreat. Her efforts pay off when she gains a moderate Instagram following, including Colin himself.
After Danni shares an edited photo of herself near the Arc de Triomphe, various Parisian landmarks are bombed by terrorists. To maintain her false narrative, she fabricates witnessing the attacks and pretends to return from Paris with her parents from the airport. As a result of her family, colleagues, and online followers believing she is a survivor of the tragedy, Danni gains widespread attention and sympathy, causing her to further perpetuate the falsehood. At a trauma support group, she meets and befriends Rowan Aldren, a teenage anti-gun activist with a large social media presence who survived a school shooting. Inspired by Rowan’s activism, Danni writes an article about her “experience” of being in a terrorist attack.
