Notes on a Scandal (2006)
Notes on a Scandal (2006) is a British psychological drama/thriller directed by Richard Eyre and produced by Robert Fox and Scott Rudin. Based on Zoë Heller’s novel of the same name from 2003, the screenplay was written by Patrick Marber. The story follows Barbara Covett, a London history teacher who has reached retirement age without ever getting married. She holds disdain for her students and colleagues at the comprehensive school where she works, finding solace only in her diary. However, when new art teacher Sheba Hart joins the staff, Barbara is immediately drawn to her and they form a friendship. But for Barbara, this connection quickly turns into an intense infatuation and obsession. Meanwhile, Sheba is balancing her career with taking care of her special needs son while being married to an older man named Richard.
After witnessing Sheba with her student Steven Connolly at the school, Barbara confronts her. Sheba explains the details of her relationship with the boy and asks Barbara to keep it a secret until after Christmas, when she wants to spend time with her family. Barbara agrees not to report Sheba as long as she ends the relationship immediately, but secretly plans to use the affair to manipulate her. During the holiday break, Barbara visits her sister who inquires about another young teacher that Barbara had befriended. Barbara tersely responds that the teacher has moved away. When asked about any other female friends, implying she may be a lesbian, Barbara denies it and insists she has no idea what her sister is referring to.
