Notorious (1946) is an American spy film noir directed and produced by Alfred Hitchcock, featuring an all-star cast including Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman, and Claude Rains. In April 1946, Alicia Huberman is recruited by government agent T.R. Devlin to infiltrate a group of escaped Nazis in Brazil. Despite initial resistance from Alicia, Devlin persuades her to help by revealing recordings of her heated arguments with her father and professing her love for America. The two later meet at the track, under the watchful eye of Alexander from the grandstand. Devlin orchestrates a meeting between Alicia and Sebastian at a riding club. Upon recognizing her, Sebastian extends an invitation to dinner, expressing his belief that their paths were bound to cross again.

The following night, Sebastian invites Alicia to join him for dinner at his home, where he will be entertaining some colleagues. Prior to the dinner, Devlin and Captain Paul Prescott advise Alicia to memorize the names and nationalities of all the guests. During the meal, Alicia notices one guest becoming visibly unsettled by a bottle of wine and promptly leaving the room. Later on, when the men are alone, this guest apologizes and attempts to leave but another insists on driving him home, insinuating that harm may come to him. Afterward, Alicia reports back to Devlin that ‘Sebastian is now on my list of companions’. When Sebastian proposes marriage, Alicia informs Devlin who responds coldly and tells her to make her own choice.
