Now Is Good (2012)
Now Is Good (2012), a teen romantic drama film by Ol Parker, is based on the novel Before I Die by Jenny Downham. The story follows Tessa, a 17-year-old battling terminal acute lymphoblastic leukemia. With help from her best friend Zoey, she works through an undisclosed bucket list before her impending death. Tessa’s father joins her on a radio talk show and together they use humor to cope with her diagnosis. Despite feeling guilty for taking attention away from her brother Cal, Tessa shows him love and care and dedicates special days just for him. Her father tries to make the most of their time together while her mother offers support but isn’t always physically present.
After Tessa finished her final round of chemotherapy, she was ready to live a normal life. She soon met Adam, her new neighbor who selflessly takes care of his disabled mother while sacrificing his own opportunities, such as attending university. The two quickly bonded and Adam joined Tessa and Zoey on their adventures. He took care of them both as they indulged in hallucinogenic mushrooms and explored the forest’s majestic cliffs before heading to a party. As the night went on, Tessa and Adam found themselves developing feelings for each other. While continuing to check off items on Tessa’s bucket list, they decided to steal from a store. However, their plans were foiled when they were caught by security. Amidst the chaos, Tessa discovered that Zoey had secretly taken a pregnancy test, hinting at the possibility of her being pregnant.
