Now You See Me (2013), a heist movie directed by Louis Leterrier, follows the journey of magicians J. Daniel Atlas, Merritt McKinney, Henley Reeves, and Jack Wilder. Each receives a tarot card that leads them to an apartment in New York City where they discover hologram technology and instructions from an unknown source. A year later, the four perform as ‘The Four Horsemen’ at the MGM Grand Las Vegas in a show funded by insurance mogul Arthur Tressler. Their final trick seemingly transports an audience member inside a bank vault in Paris owned by Crédit Républicain. As stacks of euros rain down on the Las Vegas crowd, it is revealed that the trick was actually successful as the Paris vault is found empty with only a ticket and signed playing card left behind by the audience member who placed it within the stolen money under orders from the Horsemen.
FBI agent, Dylan Rhodes, and French Interpol agent, Alma Dray, interrogate the Horsemen about the robbery but are forced to release them due to lack of evidence. Seeking further insight, they consult Thaddeus Bradley, a former magician turned magic debunker. Thaddeus had previously exposed Lionel Shrike, who attempted to revive his career and died during a failed escape trick thirty years prior. Using a mock vault under the Las Vegas stage, Thaddeus demonstrates how the Horsemen executed their theft and replaced the money with flash paper. By activating the vents without causing any smoke or residue, they successfully deceived both bank employees and audience participants alike.
