The film O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) is a clever mix of satire and drama, written, produced, co-edited, and directed by the talented duo Joel and Ethan Coen. Three prisoners – Pete, Delmar, and their leader Ulysses Everett McGill – flee from a chain gang in order to find a hidden fortune before the area is flooded. Along the way, they receive help from a blind man on a railway handcar who warns them that their reward may not be what they expect. Seeking refuge at Wash’s home – Pete’s cousin – the trio incurs the wrath of Sheriff Cooley who burns down Wash’s barn. With the help of Wash’s son, they escape and continue their journey. Along the road, they meet Tommy Johnson – a young African American who claims he made a deal with the devil to become an extraordinary guitarist.

In dire need of money, the four stop at a radio station where they record a song under the name ‘Soggy Bottom Boys’. That evening, the trio splits up with Tommy following the discovery of their car by the police. They then briefly encounter outlaw Baby Face Nelson. Little do they know, their recording becomes a smash hit. While passing by a river, they hear singing and come across three women doing laundry and singing. The women offer them corn whiskey which results in them passing out. When Delmar wakes up, he discovers Pete’s clothes next to him, now empty except for a toad. Convinced that the women were Sirens who transformed Pete into the toad, Delmar is shocked. Later on, one-eyed Bible salesman Big Dan invites them for a picnic lunch but instead robs them and kills Pete in his toad form.
