Oblivion (2013), an American post-apocalyptic film, was produced and directed by Joseph Kosinski, with a screenplay by Karl Gajdusek and Michael deBruyn. The movie is set in 2077, when repair technician Jack and communications officer Victoria seem to be the only survivors on Earth. In 2017, an alien invasion destroyed the Moon and rendered the planet uninhabitable due to nuclear warfare. Now, Jack’s job involves fixing combat drones that protect the hydrothermal platforms converting seawater into fusion energy. Their progress is reported to Sally, commander of the ‘Tet’ space station orbiting Earth once a day. Soon, they will be leaving for Saturn’s moon, Titan, to join other colonists. While their memories have been wiped clean, Jack still has dreams of a past life with an unknown woman before the war broke out.
While exploring the ruins of the New York Public Library, Jack manages to escape a scavenger trap in pursuit of a disabled drone. During this time, a platform nearby is destroyed. As Jack continues his search, he makes a startling discovery: the scavengers have been using the Empire State Building’s antenna to transmit signals into space. Determined to investigate further, Jack heads towards an area that not only sustains vegetation, but also has a lake filled with fish and drinkable water. It’s here that he finds his lakeside cabin, adorned with mementos from Earth’s past. Suddenly, an object falls from the sky and lands at the coordinates being sent by the scavengers. To his surprise, Jack finds five humans in sleep pods, among them the woman from his recurring dreams. Despite a drone destroying four of the pods, Jack manages to save the woman and brings her back to his and Victoria’s aerial base. Her name is Julia and she reveals that she is a NASA astronaut who had been in suspended animation aboard the Odyssey spaceship for 60 years.
