Director Brian De Palma released the American neo-noir psychological thriller film, Obsession (1976). The movie follows the story of Michael Courtland, a New Orleans real estate developer whose life is turned upside down in 1959 when his wife Elizabeth and young daughter Amy are taken by kidnappers. Instead of fulfilling the ransom demands with actual money, the police suggest giving them a briefcase filled with fake paper dollars. This leads to a chaotic car chase and an explosion that results in the death of the kidnappers and hostages. Courtland blames himself for not being able to save his family. Sixteen years later, in 1975, he remains consumed by grief and often visits a monument he had constructed in honor of his late wife.

The monument is a replica of the Basilica di San Miniato al Monte in Florence, Italy – the place where they first met. At the suggestion of Robert LaSalle, Courtland joins him on a work trip to Florence where he reconnects with a young woman named Sandra at the church. Reminded of his late wife, Courtland becomes fixated on Sandra and hopes to mold her into Elizabeth’s likeness. Determined to marry her, Courtland brings Sandra back to New Orleans. However, their happiness is short-lived when Sandra is kidnapped and Courtland receives a familiar note from her captors. Despite the risk of financial ruin, Courtland decides to pay the ransom and signs over his business interests to LaSalle, only to later uncover that LaSalle had orchestrated everything from the beginning in order to control him.
