Directed by Steven Soderbergh, Ocean’s Eleven (2001) is a heist comedy film featuring professional thief Danny Ocean. After serving four years in a New Jersey prison, Ocean heads to Los Angeles to reunite with his colleague Rusty Ryan. The two then travel to Las Vegas to seek the financial support of their wealthy friend Reuben Tishkoff. Their goal is to pull off a daring multi-million dollar heist, targeting three of Tishkoff’s rival Terry Benedict’s casinos: the Bellagio, the Mirage, and the MGM Grand. Knowing that the casinos are required to have enough cash to cover all bets placed by patrons, Danny anticipates that they could potentially steal over $150 million on the night of a high-profile boxing match. However, this plan requires them to bypass seemingly impenetrable security measures and systems guarding an underground vault.
Despite having been forced out of his own casino by Benedict, Tishkoff readily agrees to join forces with Danny and Rusty for their ambitious scheme. Danny and Rusty enlist the help of six former associates: Frank Catton, a con artist; Saul Bloom, an older retired con artist; Virgil and Turk Malloy, auto experts; Basher Tarr, skilled in explosives; Livingston Dell, a surveillance technician; and Yen, an acrobat. Their goal is to gather information about the Bellagio’s security measures, staff behavior, and layout. They also construct a replica of the vault to rehearse the heist. Linus is responsible for keeping tabs on Benedict, who they soon discover is in a relationship with Danny’s ex-wife Tess. When Rusty realizes that Danny’s true motivation may be getting back with Tess instead of the heist itself, he urges him to cancel the plan. However, Danny refuses.
