An American thriller film, Old (2021), was written, directed, and produced by M. Night Shyamalan. Adapted from the French-language graphic novel Sandcastle by Pierre Oscar Lévy and Frederik Peeters, it revolves around Guy and Prisca Cappa’s separation. Wanting to protect their young children, Maddox and Trent, from the news, the couple takes them on a final family vacation to a tropical resort. While staying at the hotel, they receive complimentary drinks and their kids make friends with Idlib, the manager’s nephew. One night, Maddox and Trent play a message decoding game with Idlib while their parents argue about Prisca’s benign ovarian tumor. The following day, the family is invited by the manager to a secluded beach where they encounter other guests: rapper Brendan “Mid-Sized Sedan” and his companion; surgeon Charles, his mother Agnes, wife Chrystal and daughter Kara; as well as husband and wife Jarin and Patricia Carmichael who are also close-knit.
As Trent makes a shocking discovery, Charles becomes suspicious. Brendan confesses his constant nosebleeds due to his hemophilia. As the children rapidly mature into teenagers and Agnes suddenly passes away, both families come to the conclusion that the beach is causing them to age quickly, with each person aging one year per 30 minutes. It turns out that at least one member in each family has an underlying medical condition. They soon realize that attempting to leave leads to loss of consciousness and waking up back in the same spot. In a fit of anger, Charles injures Brendan with a pocket knife, only to witness his wound heal rapidly. Meanwhile, Prisca’s ovarian tumor grows at an alarming pace, prompting Charles to perform a successful surgery to remove it.
