On the Rocks (2020)
Written and directed by Sofia Coppola, On the Rocks (2020) is an American comedy-drama film. Laura and Dean reside in Manhattan with their two daughters, Maya and Theo. Laura, a novelist, is struggling to finish her latest book while Dean, a successful entrepreneur at a burgeoning tech start-up, frequently travels for work and is surrounded by young and attractive colleagues. This leaves Laura in charge of their children. One night, upon returning from another business trip, Dean climbs into bed and passionately kisses Laura. However, when he realizes it’s her, he abruptly stops and falls asleep, leaving Laura puzzled. The following day, she discovers a woman’s toiletry bag in Dean’s luggage. He explains that it belongs to his associate Fiona, whom he offered to carry it for because she couldn’t fit it in her carry-on.
Laura turns to her father, Felix, a well-off, partially retired art dealer, to share her doubts about Dean. As a seasoned seducer, Felix tends to flirt with most of the women he meets and holds the belief that men are biologically predisposed to be unfaithful. Suspecting that Dean is being unfaithful, Felix suggests conducting an investigation and urges Laura to inspect his phone for any suspect messages. Though hesitant, Laura complies but finds no evidence of wrongdoing. When Dean surprises her with a birthday gift, a Thermomix, via FaceTime during one of his business trips, Laura does not appear too enthusiastic about it. Despite initially declining any celebration for her birthday, Laura eventually agrees to join Felix for dinner at a restaurant.
