One Day (2011)
One Day (2011), a romantic drama film directed by Lone Scherfig from a screenplay by David Nicholls, tells the story of two characters who meet on July 15th, St. Swithin’s day, and their relationship over the course of 20 years. After graduating from the University of Edinburgh in 1988, Dexter and Emma spend a platonic night together and agree to remain friends. The following year, he helps her move to London to pursue her dream of becoming a writer. However, she struggles to find success and ends up working as a waitress at a Mexican restaurant where she meets Ian, an aspiring comedian. Throughout the years, Dexter travels the world while keeping in touch with Emma. He even visits her on July 15th in 1991 and suggests they take a holiday together. They go to France in 1992 but despite their mutual attraction, Emma rejects Dexter’s advances.
By 1993, Dexter has become a successful television presenter with a raucous late-night show. On July 15, 1994, Dexter pays a visit to his parents after learning that his mother has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Still feeling the effects of a wild night of partying, he unintentionally angers his father. His mother expresses her disappointment in his reckless behavior and reminds him that he still has room for growth as a person. That same night, Emma goes out with Ian on a date and despite their initial connection being lacking, they start dating. By 1995, Emma works as a teacher and shares a home with Ian, but she becomes frustrated with his lack of motivation. Meanwhile, Dexter’s new television show gains attention and unfortunately earns him the title of ‘the most annoying man on telly’.
