One Fine Day (1996)
One Fine Day (1996), directed by Michael Hoffman, is an American romantic comedy-drama film. It follows the story of Melanie Parker, an architect who experiences a rough start to her day when she is running late to drop off her son Sammy at school. This delay is caused by fellow divorced father Jack Taylor, a New York Daily News reporter, who forgets to bring his daughter Maggie to school and is left with no choice but to take care of her for the morning. The children miss out on a Circle Line boat cruise that was part of their school field trip due to their tardiness. Realizing they both have hectic schedules, the parents must work together and supervise the kids for the day. In the chaos of sharing a taxi, they accidentally switch cell phones, resulting in them receiving calls intended for the other person throughout the morning.
Melanie is preparing for a crucial architectural presentation, while Jack searches for information on the New York mayor’s mob ties. Unfortunately, Sammy’s playtime at Melanie’s office causes damage to her scale model display, leading her to take him to a day care center having a ‘Superhero Day’. It just so happens that Jack is there trying to handle a mischievous Maggie. Together, they use their creativity and resourcefulness to make costumes for the children. Melanie rushes out to get her model repaired and leaves Sammy at the day care. However, she receives a call from him about another child ingesting drugs and frantically reaches out to Jack for help in picking up the kids.
