Only the Brave (2017)
The American biographical drama film, Only the Brave (2017), was directed by Joseph Kosinski and written by Ken Nolan and Eric Warren Singer. It is based on Sean Flynn’s GQ article No Exit. In 2007, Eric Marsh of the Prescott Fire Department in Arizona faces frustration while battling forest fires. The distant Type 1 or ‘Hotshot’ crews overrule his operational suggestions causing sorrow for his area. To change this dynamic, Marsh gains approval from the Mayor to form an unprecedented certified municipal-based Hotshot crew in Prescott. However, he needs new members to undergo rigorous training and qualification testing for this highly dangerous duty. One such recruit is the young wastrel, Brendan McDonough.
During their journey, the new team faces and overcomes a major obstacle, leading to the creation of the celebrated Granite Mountain Hotshots. This experience brings about significant changes for all the men, especially McDonough, as they develop a strong bond through their shared struggles. However, their strength and bravery are put to the ultimate test in 2013 when they confront the infamous Yarnell Hill Fire. With determination and selflessness, this group of nineteen men enters the raging inferno to protect lives and homes from being consumed by the merciless flames. Tragically, they become trapped within the unescapable grasp of the fire. Will June of 2013 forever be remembered as a time of great sacrifice?
