Open Range (2003)
Open Range (2003) is a film set in Montana during the late 1800s. It was directed and co-produced by Kevin Costner, with a screenplay by Craig Storper based on the novel The Open Range Men by Lauran Paine. The story follows ‘Boss’ Spearman and his hired hands, Charley Waite, Mose, and Button, as they drive a herd of cattle across the country. While Boss is an experienced rancher, Charley carries heavy guilt from his time as a soldier in the Civil War. When Boss sends Mose to nearby Harmonville for supplies, things go awry. The town is run by Denton Baxter, an Irish immigrant who despises open-range ranchers like Boss for using his land for grazing. After defending himself in a fight with some of Baxter’s men, Mose is unjustly beaten and jailed by the corrupt marshal Poole. The only person in Harmonville brave enough to stand up to Baxter is Percy, the owner of the local livery stable.
Boss and Charley grow worried when Mose fails to return. They retrieve him from jail, but not before Baxter issues an ultimatum for them to vacate the area by nightfall. Mose’s injuries are severe, prompting Boss and Charley to seek help from the local physician, Doc Barlow. There they meet his assistant, Sue, whom Charley finds attractive. However, he assumes she is Doc Barlow’s spouse and declines the invitation to stay overnight. In addition to this, masked riders are found scouting their cattle, leading Boss and Charley to take matters into their own hands by ambushing the riders’ campsite and stripping them of their weapons in a humiliating manner. As this is happening, other riders attack their campsite and shoot both Mose and Charley’s dog Tig. Additionally, Button is gravely wounded after being shot in the chest.
