In Open Water (2003), an American survival horror thriller film, an American couple’s vacation takes a dangerous turn when they are unintentionally left behind in shark-infested waters by the crew of their boat. Daniel Kintner and Susan Watkins struggle with limited quality time due to their busy schedules, leading them to plan a scuba-diving trip to strengthen their relationship. Despite being part of a group dive on the second day, they decide to split off briefly. But when the head count is taken and recorded as 20 passengers, the dive master mistakenly believes that everyone is back on board and departs from the site. Unfortunately, Daniel and Susan remain underwater, unaware of the situation. As they resurface, the boat is nowhere in sight. They are convinced that their companions will return shortly to rescue them.

Adrift in the ocean, it slowly dawns on Daniel and Susan that their boat isn’t coming back. Despite their arguments and struggles with hunger and exhaustion, they come to the realization that they have likely drifted far from where they first dove. Adding to their distress, sharks have been lurking below the water’s surface. Soon, jellyfish surround them, leaving painful stings on their skin as the sharks move in closer. Susan doesn’t initially realize it, but she receives a small shark bite on her leg. When Daniel goes under the water, he discovers a small fish feasting on the exposed flesh of her wound. In a later turn of events, a shark bites Daniel and his injury starts to bleed heavily. Using her weight belt as a makeshift bandage, Susan tries to stop the bleeding as Daniel appears to slip into shock.
