Open Water 2: Adrift (2006) is a German English-language psychological horror thriller film directed by Hans Horn, inspired by the short story Adrift by Japanese author Koji Suzuki. Though the original title was taken from the story, promotional posters claimed it was based on actual events. The film has no connection to Open Water (2003) and its script had been written before the release of the latter. A group of friends, including Amy, James, Zach, Lauren, Dan, and his new girlfriend Michelle, embark on a weekend cruise on Dan’s new yacht. While most of them jump into the water for a swim, Amy and Dan remain on board with their infant daughter Sarah. After putting her down for a nap, Amy places her life jacket back on – she refuses to take it off while onboard due to her aquaphobia stemming from a childhood incident where her father tragically drowned while swimming with her as a young child.
As they discuss her fear, Amy is suddenly scooped into Dan’s arms and they both scream as he jumps into the water. The rest of the group realizes that there is no ladder to climb back on board and their attempts to reach the deck are futile due to its smooth surface and high height. They spot a boat full of teenagers approaching, but when the group tries to get their attention, the teenagers mistake their gestures for a friendly greeting and sail away. A phone starts ringing from Zach’s clothes hanging off the side of the boat, but unfortunately they fall into the water as Dan reaches for them. The phone is now soaked and although Zach tries to answer it, all they can hear is a chorus of birthday singers before it abruptly goes dead.
