Open Your Eyes (1997) is a Spanish film directed and co-scored by Alejandro Amenábar, written by Amenábar and Mateo Gil. A handsome young man awakens to the sound of a female voice urging him to open his eyes. He drives through an empty city, before waking up once again, this time to find a woman in his bed. He instructs her not to leave him any messages on his alarm clock. From a Madrid prison cell, 25-year-old César recounts his tale to psychiatrist Antonio while wearing a prosthetic mask. Through flashbacks, we see that César is quite the ladies’ man. At his birthday celebration, he flirts with Sofía, who happens to be his best friend Pelayo’s date for the night. Later on, he invites her back to his place and they spend the night together, but nothing more intimate occurs between them.
The following morning, Nuria, César’s former lover, picks him up at Sofía’s flat and offers him a ride and sex. But during the drive to her house, she intentionally crashes the car in an attempt to kill them both. While César survives the accident, he is left with severe disfigurement that cannot be fixed through cosmetic surgery. To avoid being seen, he begins wearing a mask to cover his face. Sofía becomes distant and unable to bear seeing him. As César experiences strange events after his disfigurement, he ends up falling asleep drunk on the street. When he wakes up, everything has changed – Sofía now claims to love him again and his appearance has been restored by surgeons. However, during a night of intimacy with Sofía, she suddenly transforms into Nuria.
