Directed by John Madden, the war drama film Operation Mincemeat (2021) is based on Ben Macintyre’s book about the British operation during World War II. In the midst of the war in 1943, Lieutenant Commander Ewen Montagu, a Jewish barrister, remains in England while his wife Iris and children seek refuge in the United States. He sets aside his law practice to join the Twenty Committee, accompanied by his secretary Hester Leggett. With Britain entrenched in conflict, Prime Minister Winston Churchill has promised the US that an invasion of Sicily will occur in July to advance northward. However, as Sicily is deemed an obvious target and could have strong defense from the Wehrmacht, Admiral Godfrey proposes deceiving Nazi Germany by making them believe that Greece will be invaded instead.

Based on the Trout Memo, Charles Cholmondeley suggests an operation involving a deceased person carrying false information and being found on the shore. Despite initial hesitation from Godfrey, Montagu and Cholmondeley are given the go-ahead to plan the mission with Lieutenant Commander Ian Fleming. They acquire a body, belonging to a homeless man named Glyndwr Michael, who is believed to have died by suicide. The body is then given a new identity as Major William Martin of the Royal Marines, complete with a detailed backstory and ID photos. To add authenticity, Jean Leslie, a widowed secretary at the office, offers her photo to be used as “Pam”, Martin’s fake fiancée. The team also prepares items to be found in Martin’s pockets, including theater tickets, personal bills and even a love letter written by “Pam” (also known as Hester).
