Oppenheimer (2023)

Oppenheimer (2023) is an epic biographical drama film written, directed and co-produced by Christopher Nolan. The story follows 22-year-old J. Robert Oppenheimer, a doctoral student studying experimental physics at the Cavendish Laboratory in the University of Cambridge under Patrick Blackett. Struggling with homesickness and frustration towards Blackett, Oppenheimer leaves him a poisoned apple, but ultimately decides against it. Upon the advice of visiting scientist Niels Bohr, he transfers to the University of Göttingen where he meets fellow scientist Isidor Isaac Rabi and later encounters theoretical physicist Werner Heisenberg in Switzerland. With a desire to further research in quantum physics, Oppenheimer begins teaching at both the University of California, Berkeley and California Institute of Technology. During this time, he marries Katherine ‘Kitty’ Puening, a biologist and former communist, and also has an intermittent affair with Jean Tatlock, a troubled communist who later takes her own life.
Upon its discovery in 1938, nuclear fission sparked a realization in Oppenheimer that it could have devastating consequences if weaponized. As a result, U.S. Army Colonel Leslie Groves recruited him in 1942 to lead the Manhattan Project during World War II. Oppenheimer had concerns about Germany’s nuclear capabilities under the leadership of Heisenberg and thus gathered a team at Los Alamos Laboratory including Rabi, Hans Bethe, and Edward Teller. Additionally, he collaborated with Enrico Fermi, Leo Szilard, and David L. Hill from the University of Chicago. Teller’s calculations indicated that an atomic detonation could potentially set off an uncontrollable chain reaction in the atmosphere – but after consulting with Albert Einstein, Oppenheimer determined this risk was acceptable. Despite Teller’s unsuccessful proposal to develop a hydrogen bomb, a setback that led him to consider leaving the project, Oppenheimer convinced him to remain on board.
