Orange County (2002)
Orange County (2002) is an American comedy featuring Colin Hanks and Jack Black. The film follows Shaun Brumder, a teenager who is bright but lacks interest in academics. He embraces the laid-back lifestyle of Southern California, spending his time surfing, partying, and drinking in the affluent town of Orange County. However, after the tragic death of his best friend Lonny in a surfing accident, Shaun reevaluates his priorities. A chance encounter with Marcus Skinner’s novel sparks his passion for writing and he sets his sights on attending Stanford University to study under Skinner, who happens to be an English professor there. Shaun dedicates himself to improving academically and achieves remarkable grades and SAT scores. Showing great leadership skills, he becomes president of his graduating class.
Acting upon guidance from Ms. Cobb, his counselor, Shaun only applies to Stanford – a decision that ultimately backfires due to Ms. Cobb’s mistake of mixing up transcripts with another student. Bud, Shaun’s wealthy father who left his family for a younger woman, is approached by Shaun in hopes of receiving a donation towards Stanford to improve his chances of acceptance. However, Bud disagrees with Shaun’s aspiration to become a writer and declines. In an effort to help, Ashley persuades her friend Tanya to arrange an interview for Shaun at her grandfather’s house. Despite their best intentions, the disruptive behavior of Shaun’s dysfunctional family members – his mother Cindy struggling with alcohol and emotional stability, and his brother Lance who frequently indulges in marijuana – results in the swift departure of the interviewers in dismay.
