Original Sin (2001)
Original Sin (2001), an American erotic romantic thriller, stars Antonio Banderas and Angelina Jolie. Based on the novel Waltz into Darkness by Cornell Woolrich, it is a remake of the 1969 François Truffaut film Mississippi Mermaid. The story takes place in late 19th century Cuba during Spanish rule, and alternates between scenes of a woman confessing her past to a priest as she awaits execution and the events leading up to her impending fate. Luis Vargas, a Cuban man, sends for Julia Russell from Delaware to be his mail-order bride. Upon her arrival, Julia looks nothing like her photo. She reveals that she wanted more than a man who only values outward appearances, so she used someone else’s picture. In turn, Luis admits to deceiving her about his true identity as a wealthy plantation owner instead of a lowly clerk. Despite their mutual deception, Julia remarks that they both share the trait of being untrustworthy.
They promise each other to make an effort to understand and trust one another in their relationship. Shortly after arriving in Cuba, Luis and Julia tied the knot in a church ceremony. Luis was immediately smitten with his new wife. However, Julia’s sister Emily grew concerned and sent a heartfelt letter inquiring about her well-being. Anxious that Emily might assume the worst if she received no response, Luis urged Julia to write back. Reluctant at first, Julia eventually wrote a letter to her sister. To solidify their relationship, Luis added Julia’s name to his business and personal bank accounts, allowing her complete freedom to spend as she pleased. On Sunday, a detective named Walter Downs arrived from Wilmington on behalf of Emily, who had hired him to locate her missing sister. He requested to meet with Julia, prompting concern from both Luis and Julia.
