Oscar (1991) is an American comedy film directed by John Landis. It is a remake of the 1967 French film of the same name, but with a setting in Depression-era New York City. In the prologue, gangster Angelo ‘Snaps’ Provolone promises his dying father to leave his life of crime behind and turn over a new leaf. A month later, Snaps begins his day at his mansion, where he has an important meeting scheduled with prominent bankers. He plans to donate a large sum of cash and secure a spot on the bank’s board of trustees, fulfilling his promise to lead an honest life. As he prepares for this meeting, Snaps’ young accountant Anthony Rossano shows up at the mansion, requesting a significant raise and professing love for ‘Snaps’ daughter’. This angers Snaps, who does not want Anthony marrying his daughter, and he goes to talk to her about it.

Lisa, the only child of Snaps and Sofia, has always had big dreams of traveling and seeing the world’s great sights. However, her overprotective father stands in the way of her plans. Desperate to break free from her sheltered life, Lisa takes the advice of Nora, their maid, and tells a lie to her parents. She claims to be pregnant in order to convince them to let her move out. To make things more complicated, Snaps believes that Anthony is the potential father as he has expressed interest in marrying ‘Snaps’ daughter’. But when Lisa reveals that Oscar, their former chauffeur who is currently serving overseas in the military, is actually the father, things become even more chaotic. As if that wasn’t enough drama, it is later exposed that Theresa, the woman Anthony loves, is not really Snaps’ daughter like she had previously claimed.
