Oscar and Lucinda (1997)
The romantic drama film, Oscar and Lucinda (1997), directed by Gillian Armstrong, follows the lives of two individuals – Lucinda Leplastrier and Oscar. As a child growing up in Australia, Lucinda is captivated by a Prince Rupert’s Drop, which sparks her lifelong passion for glass. Sadly, her parents pass away and she inherits great wealth when her guardians sell off their family farmland. With her newfound riches, Lucinda purchases a glass factory and becomes involved in gambling after being introduced to it by her accountant. Meanwhile, Oscar is raised by his father as a Plymouth Brother but eventually converts to Anglicanism after receiving a divine sign. While studying, he discovers gambling and becomes quite successful, using his winnings to support his education and donate the rest to the less fortunate.
He earns a scholarship to study in New South Wales and meets Lucinda on the boat over. She confesses to gambling, which he defends as not being a sin. As they play cards together, a storm causes Oscar to panic. However, in New South Wales, he loses his scholarship due to his inability to stop gambling. Lucinda offers him a place to live and work in her glass factory. Enthralled by a model of a glass church she shows him, Oscar proposes that they create a real-life replica and bet on their mutual friend Reverend Dennis Hasset’s reaction when they deliver it on Good Friday. Lucinda agrees to the wager, using their inheritances as stakes.
