Out (2020)

Out (2020), an American computer-animated short film, follows the story of Greg and his boyfriend Manuel as they prepare to move. As they pack up Greg’s belongings outside his townhouse, a magical cat and dog appear. The cat grants Jim’s collar with special powers while inside, Manuel encourages Greg to come out to his parents who have arrived unexpectedly to assist with the move. In a hurried moment, Greg hides a photo of them together and Manuel discreetly slips out through the back door. As they hold onto Jim’s collar, Greg playfully wishes that he could become a dog, leading to their minds switching bodies in a magical twist of events.

‘Greg’ rushes outside to join his stoic father who is lighting the grill. ‘Jim’, in a state of panic, attempts to reach him while also trying to prevent his eager mother from discovering the photo. Growing increasingly frustrated with the dog’s disobedience, she vocalizes her sadness about her son’s impending move, as ‘Jim’ listens attentively. In her mind, she envisions a conversation with Greg and expresses her wish for him to find love and happiness. Suddenly, ‘Jim’ realizes that not only does she already know about his sexuality, but she also accepts him for who he is. He briefly comforts her before pursuing ‘Greg’ and successfully reversing their minds.
