Out of Sight (1998) is an American crime comedy film directed by Steven Soderbergh and written by Scott Frank, adapted from Elmore Leonard’s 1996 novel of the same name. Jack Foley, a career bank robber, is serving time at Lompoc Penitentiary in California alongside his partner Buddy Bragg. During his time there, he befriends Glenn Michaels – a jittery petty criminal who never takes off his sunglasses – and Richard Ripley, a wealthy white collar criminal from Detroit. After Foley saves Ripley from being blackmailed by boxer Maurice ‘Snoopy’ Miller, Ripley offers Foley a job when he gets out and boasts about having uncut diamonds hidden at his home. However, upon Foley’s release he only receives an offer for a lowly security guard position. When he confronts Ripley about this, he is insulted and kicked out of the building.

Driven by frustration, Foley impulsively robs a bank across the street but is unable to get away when his car won’t start, resulting in him being sent to Glades Correctional Institution in Florida. At Glades, Foley realizes that Chino is plotting a breakout. He contacts his ex-wife Adele and asks her to inform Buddy that they plan to use their underground tunnel for their own escape as well. However, on the night of the breakout, U.S. Marshal Karen Sisco arrives at the prison just as Chino’s group starts digging outside the fence. She immediately alerts the guards. To make his escape, Foley dons a stolen guard’s uniform and sneaks through the tunnel. He comes across Sisco and pretends to be chasing after the fleeing inmates from inside. Foley and Buddy then take Sisco’s car and she is forced to hide with them in the trunk while Buddy drives.
