Out of the Furnace (2013)
Out of the Furnace (2013), an American crime drama film directed by Scott Cooper and written by Cooper and Brad Ingelsby, follows steel mill worker Russell Baze as he deals with his brother Rodney’s involvement in illegal gambling. After seeing Rodney at a horse racing simulcast, Russell learns that he borrowed money from John Petty, who runs unlawful games at his bar. Russell visits Petty, pays off part of the debt, and promises to cover the rest. However, after driving home drunk one night, Russell causes a fatal car accident and is imprisoned for vehicular manslaughter. During his incarceration, Russell’s father passes away and his girlfriend Lena leaves him for police chief Wesley Barnes. Upon his release from prison, Russell returns to work at the mill but discovers that Rodney has participated in an unlicensed bareknuckle fight to repay some of his debt. Aghast at his brother’s actions, Russell finds evidence on Rodney’s swollen knuckles and confronts him the next morning.
Russell urges his friend Rodney, a four-tour Iraq war veteran, to consider working in the mill. However, due to Rodney’s mental scars from his time in the military, he is unable to hold down a regular job. Tired of constantly fighting for small sums of money to pay off his debts, Rodney convinces Petty to set up a more profitable fight for him. Reluctantly, Petty agrees and arranges a match with Harlan DeGroat – a ruthless drug dealer from rural New Jersey who Petty owes money to. Meanwhile, Russell is hoping to reconcile with his ex-girlfriend, but she is pregnant with another man’s baby. Despite feeling visibly upset, Russell assures her that she will make an excellent mother and they part ways knowing that their relationship cannot be mended. Once again, Rodney is instructed to take a dive during the fight. As the match progresses, Rodney almost knocks out his opponent but ultimately follows through with the plan and loses intentionally.
