Out of Time (2003)
Out of Time (2003) sees director Carl Franklin and Denzel Washington reunite, having previously worked together on Devil in a Blue Dress. The film follows the story of Mathias ‘Matt’ Lee Whitlock, respected Chief of Police in the Florida Keys town of Banyan Key. Despite their recent separation, Matt is currently dating Ann Merai-Harrison, an old high school flame who is facing abuse from her husband, former professional quarterback Chris. During a trip to the doctor with Ann, Matt learns she has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Meanwhile, Matt is also navigating a divorce from his wife Alex – a homicide detective – and maintains a friendship with medical examiner Chae.
Ann plans to show her gratitude for Matt’s loyalty by naming him the sole beneficiary of her $1,000,000 life insurance policy. As Matt proposes that she should travel to Switzerland for a groundbreaking medical treatment, Ann faces the hurdle of lacking funds. In an effort to assist her, Matt withdraws $485,000 from evidence seized in a raid on a drug lord and gives it to Ann for the trip. Tragically, during a suspicious house fire that claims the lives of Ann and Chris, the money is destroyed. Devastated when he discovers their charred remains, Matt uncovers evidence that reveals the doctor who diagnosed Ann was an impostor and she never had cancer. Believing he has been deliberately framed, Matt launches an investigation.
