The film Outlaw King (2018) follows the story of Robert the Bruce, a Scottish king in the 14th century during the Scottish Wars of Independence. In 1304, while outside of Stirling Castle under siege, Robert and other Scottish nobles including John Comyn surrender to Edward I of England. Edward demands their homage as a condition for regaining their land. Robert then engages in a sparring match with Edward’s son, Prince Edward, and is later married to Elizabeth de Burgh, who happens to be Edward’s goddaughter. Lord James Douglas also arrives, seeking to reclaim his ancestral lands but is rejected due to his family’s alleged treason. As the King and Prince leave Scotland, Comyn and Bruce are left in charge under the watchful eye of Aymer de Valence, Earl of Pembroke. Eventually, Bruce marries Elizabeth but chooses to postpone consummating their marriage out of respect. Shortly after, his father dies and he begins to question whether his friendship with the English king was a mistake.

Following his delivery of taxes to the English, Bruce takes note of their unpopularity. This leads to rioting when rebel William Wallace is quartered. With plans for another revolt in mind, Bruce enlists the support of his family, including Elizabeth. In an attempt to persuade John Comyn to join them, he uses the threat of informing Edward. In a state of panic, Bruce ends up killing Comyn inside a church. As a result, the Scottish clergy offers him a pardon on the condition that he supports the Catholic Church in Scotland and agrees to the Crown of Scotland deal. However, this news reaches King Edward who immediately declares Bruce an outlaw. In response, Prince Edward is sent to crush the uprising with strict orders from the king not to show mercy to any supporters of Bruce. Despite facing opposition from his fellow nobles who refuse to break their oaths to Edward, Bruce goes ahead with his plan and heads to Scone where he is ultimately crowned as king of Scots.
