Over the Garden Wall (2014) is an American animated miniseries on Cartoon Network, created by Patrick McHale. It tells the story of two half-brothers, Wirt and Greg, who get lost in a strange forest known as the Unknown. In order to return home, they must navigate the supernatural forest with occasional assistance from the enigmatic Woodsman and Beatrice, an irritable bluebird. Along their journey, they seek out Adelaide, who is rumored to hold the key to lifting a curse on Beatrice’s family and guiding the brothers back home.
Wirt, the older brother, tends to worry and avoids making decisions. His interests include playing the clarinet and writing poetry, which he usually keeps to himself due to fear of ridicule. On the other hand, Greg, his younger brother, is carefree and naive, much to Wirt’s dismay. He carries a frog named Jack Jones that he found, an ongoing joke throughout their journey. The group is also being followed by the Beast, an ancient creature who preys on lost souls and turns them into ‘Edelwood trees’. After encountering Adelaide, Wirt realizes she plans to enslave them and angrily leaves with Greg after finding out Beatrice had deceived them.
