Over the Top (1987)
Over the Top (1987) is an American sports drama featuring Sylvester Stallone in the lead role. The film was both produced and directed by Menahem Golan. Lincoln Hawk is a hardworking truck driver who also competes in arm wrestling for some extra income. His ex-wife Christina, who is suffering from a heart condition, asks that he pick up their son Michael from military school and try to establish a relationship with him – after all, Hawk had left them ten years ago. However, Michael’s affluent grandfather, Christina’s father Jason Cutler, doesn’t believe that Hawk has any right to be in his grandson’s life. Initially distrusting and contemptuous of Hawk, Michael gradually warms up to him during their road trip from Colorado to California. But when they finally reach their destination, they receive some heartbreaking news: Christina has passed away due to complications during surgery.
In his grief and confusion, Michael blames Hawk for causing delays that prevented him from seeing his mother one last time before she died – ultimately leading him to leave for his grandfather’s estate. After Hawk is arrested for ramraiding the gated mansion in an attempt to rescue Michael, he is visited by Michael in jail. Despite being forgiven by Michael, he decides it would be best for him to live with his grandfather for safety reasons. In order to have charges dropped, Hawk agrees to give custody of Michael to Cutler. He then sets off to compete in the World Armwrestling Championship in Las Vegas, hoping to use the prize money to establish his own trucking company. Among the other participants, Bull Hurley stands out as the undefeated world champion for the last five years and is significantly larger than most.
