Overcomer (2019)
Overcomer (2019), a Christian drama directed by Alex Kendrick and co-written with Stephen Kendrick, marks the sixth film for the brothers and their second under Kendrick Brothers Productions. John Harrison, a basketball coach at the local high school and husband to Amy, faces a difficult situation when the manufacturing plant in town shuts down. This causes many students and their families to leave, resulting in the loss of teachers and coaches at the school. In an effort to save another program from being cut, Principal Olivia Brooks (played by Priscilla Shirer) asks John to take on coaching duties for the cross country team. Despite only one student showing up for tryouts, John agrees to work with asthmatic runner Hannah Scott. Hannah resides with her grandmother, Barbara Scott, who has always told her that both of her parents are deceased.
Hannah has a habit of taking things from classmates, amassing a sizable collection. During one of his regular visits to assist the pastor, John accidentally wanders into the room of Thomas Hill, a blind man battling diabetic complications who used to run cross country. Over time, John learns that Hill is Hannah’s father, who had left her and her mother when she was an infant. In an effort to protect Hannah from potential pain, Barbara had been dishonest with her about her father. Further investigation reveals that the principal, who happens to be Barbara’s friend, has been covering Hannah’s tuition fees. After informing Hannah about her father’s identity, John and Amy accompany her to meet him. Initially hesitant, she eventually warms up to him and begins making frequent visits.
