Pacific Heights (1990) is an American psychological thriller directed by John Schlesinger and written by Daniel Pyne. During their time in San Francisco, unmarried couple Drake Goodman and Patty Palmer purchase an expensive 19th-century Victorian house in the exclusive neighborhood known as Pacific Heights. As they settle into their new home, they also rent one of the building’s first-floor apartments to the Watanabes, a friendly Japanese couple. However, things take a dark turn when Carter Hayes visits to view the remaining vacant unit. Despite driving an expensive 1977 Porsche 911 and carrying large amounts of cash, Hayes is hesitant to undergo a credit check. In order to secure the apartment, he convinces Drake to waive the credit check by providing a list of references and an upfront payment of six months’ rent through wire transfer.
Despite his calm demeanor after being attacked earlier, it becomes clear that Hayes may not be who he seems. Before any payment is made, Hayes suddenly appears one morning and locks himself inside the apartment. Despite his promise to transfer the funds, they never materialize. The constant hammering and drilling noises continue day and night from within the apartment, but no one answers the door. When Drake tries to enter, he discovers that the locks have been changed. In an attempt to end the disturbance, Drake cuts off the electricity and heat to the apartment, but Hayes calls the police who side with him and reprimand Drake. Despite hiring a lawyer named Stephanie MacDonald, Drake’s attempt to evict Hayes is foiled by his own actions.
