The Merry Gentleman is the story of Kate, a young woman who flees her abusive policeman husband, moving to Chicago. In her new life, she befriends a co-worker but otherwise generally keeps to herself, due to her embarrassment over a black eye left over from her husband’s latest attack. Most everyone she encounters is of low character, which reinforces her feelings of loneliness and reclusion. One night, she is seen in an office window through the rifle scope of professional hit man Frank Logan, who is on the roof of the opposite building, as he prepares to shoot the occupant on another floor. Afterwards, rather than leaving, he removes his hat and steps out on to the ...

The narrator, Jim Douglas, tells the story of Herbie the Volkswagen Beetle. Herbie was owned by an egotistic race car driver and car dealer named Simon Moore III, who did not treat Herbie very well. During a race, Simon called Herbie junk, which caused Herbie to rebel against him, and they ended up in last place. Simon was not pleased, and he threw out Herbie in a junkyard. Hank Cooper, a small-town mechanic who works in a local garage, enters a junk-car race, where drivers select a jalopy and attempt to start and race it. Hank ends up getting “last choice” and is forced to choose the only car left, the broken-down Herbie. Assisted by his “spiritually ...

Jim Douglas is a miserable race car driver, reduced to competing in demolition derby races against drivers half his age. Jim lives in an old fire house overlooking San Francisco Bay with his friend and mechanic, Tennessee Steinmetz, a jolly Brooklynite who constantly extols the virtues of spiritual enlightenment, having spent time amongst Buddhist monks in Tibet, and builds “art” from car parts. After yet another race ends in a crash (and Tennessee turns his Edsel into a sculpture), Jim finds himself without a car and heads into town in search of some cheap wheels. He is enticed into an upmarket European car showroom after setting eyes on an attractive sales assistant and ...

But as opening hour approaches, Rogan falls prey to doubts and fears, egged on by another playwright whose last work was trashed by the local newspaper’s new drama critic, Steven Schwimmer. He eventually lets those fears drive him to resolve to kill the critic (who he assumes will also trash his play) and he procures a handgun with which to perform the deed. Instead of attending the play’s opening night, Rogan spends time in a bar, accompanied by a lady cab driver and her grandson; earlier ...
