Pale Rider (1985)
Pale Rider (1985) is an American Western film directed and produced by Clint Eastwood, who also stars as the lead character. The story takes place in the Old West, near LaHood, California in Carbon Canyon. In this area, mining tycoon Coy LaHood is engaged in a campaign of intimidation against independent prospectors and their families. This includes Hull Barret, who is courting Sarah Wheeler. After a violent attack by LaHood’s men that results in the death of her dog, Sarah’s daughter Megan desperately prays for help. Her prayers are answered when a man on a pale horse arrives in Carbon Canyon. When Hull goes to town to get supplies, four of LaHood’s men assault him with axe handles until the stranger comes to his rescue and fights them off with his own axe handle. Grateful for his help, Hull invites the stranger to join them for dinner.
While he is washing up before dinner, Hull notices what appears to be six bullet wounds on the stranger’s back. When the stranger arrives at the dinner table, he is sporting a clerical collar and is subsequently known as ‘Preacher’. Coy LaHood’s son, Joshua, endeavors to intimidate Preacher with a large laborer named Club. However, Preacher manages to take down Club with a single sledgehammer blow to his groin. Coy comes back from Sacramento and discovers that Preacher has arrived. He makes an unsuccessful attempt to bribe and then threaten him. At Preacher’s suggestion, LaHood offers the miners $1,000 per claim on the condition that they leave within 24 hours. Upset by their refusal, LaHood turns to a corrupt marshal named Stockburn for assistance in removing them forcefully.
