Palm Trees in the Snow (2015) is a Spanish romantic drama film directed by Fernando González Molina. It follows Kilian, who returns to his birthplace of Fernando Pó (present Bioko) in 1954 to join his father Antón and brother Jacobo in harvesting cocoa. The movie begins in 1968 with Kilian and Bisila sharing a passionate moment before Kilian’s departure, leaving behind tokens of remembrance for Bisila. Fast forward to Pasolobino, Spain in 2003 where Clarence attends her estranged father Jacobo’s funeral. After the service, she and cousin Daniela discuss potentially selling their family land and Kilian’s struggle with dementia. While going through Kilian’s office, Clarence discovers a journal, half-torn picture, and torn note referencing money sent to an unknown woman.

Clarence inquires about the note with Julia, a long-time family friend. She reveals that her late husband Manuel was the author, but she is unsure of the identity of the woman mentioned. Learning this new information, Clarence decides to travel to Bioko in Equatorial Guinea to learn more about her father’s past. She also makes a decision to bring any potential relatives back to Spain if they are found. Julia advises Clarence to seek out Kilian’s former houseboy and friend, Simón. The scene shifts back to 1954 where young Kilian and Jacobo say goodbye to their mother and sister Catalina before leaving for Guinea. Before departing, Catalina gifts Kilian a journal and encourages him to document his experiences. On their journey, Kilian and Jacobo meet Manuel, who is the new resident doctor of a cocoa plantation estate.
