Panic Room (2002)
Directed by David Fincher, Panic Room (2002) is an American thriller about recently divorced Meg Altman and her eleven-year-old daughter, Sarah, who move into a four-story brownstone on New York City’s Upper West Side. The previous owner, a millionaire with a reclusive nature, had equipped the house with a ‘panic room’ for protection against intruders. The reinforced room contains concrete and steel walls, as well as a thick steel door. Additionally, the house has an extensive security system with numerous surveillance cameras and a public address system. On their first night in the new home, Meg and Sarah are faced with three unexpected visitors: Junior, the grandson of the previous owner; Burnham, an employee of the home’s security company; and Raoul, a thug recruited by Junior.
Their main objective is to steal bearer bonds from a floor safe inside the panic room that belonged to their grandfather and is currently being contested in probate by his extended family. As Meg wakes during the night for a bathroom break, she notices men on the security cameras. In response, she and Sarah hurry to the panic room. The men attempt to flush them out by releasing propane gas through the air vents. In an act of desperation, Meg sets fire to the gas while they shield themselves with flame-resistant blankets. Unfortunately, Junior suffers severe burns from the ignited gas. Meg takes advantage of the main telephone line and contacts her ex-husband, Stephen. However, their conversation is abruptly cut short when the intruders sever the phone line.
