Parenthood (1989) is a hilarious and touching family dramedy, helmed by director Ron Howard who collaborated with screenwriters Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel on the story. Gil Buckman, a salesman from St. Louis, is struggling to juggle his job and his family. He faces a tough situation when he discovers that his oldest son Kevin needs therapy for emotional problems, and that his younger children Taylor and Justin also have their own issues. As he begins to blame himself and question his parenting abilities, Gil’s wife Karen reveals she is pregnant with their fourth child, leaving him uncertain if he can handle the added responsibility. On top of this, Gil worries that the stress of providing for another child and office politics at work are transforming him into the same distant workaholic that he resented in his own father Frank.

Overwhelmed by challenges at home and in the workplace, Gil opens up to Frank about his doubts as a parent. Frank reassures Gil that his constant worry about his children is normal and never-ending. After a heart-to-heart, Gil becomes more content with the life he has chosen. Later, their elderly grandmother shares a story about riding a roller coaster for the first time, which helped Gil see the value in experiencing a range of emotions compared to the simplicity of a merry-go-round. Gil’s sister, Helen, is a divorced bank manager whose ex-husband is a wealthy dentist with little interest in their kids aside from minimal child support payments. He instead spends most of his time with his second family. Gil’s nephew Garry, who just entered puberty, tends to be introverted and enjoys spending time alone in his room with an enigmatic paper bag.
