Passengers (2016) is an American science-fiction romance film directed by Morten Tyldum and written by Jon Spaihts. The spaceship Avalon, carrying 5,000 colonists and 258 crew members in hibernation pods, embarks on a 120-year voyage from Earth to the planet Homestead II as part of a mass exodus due to environmental destruction. However, after only three decades, an asteroid collision causes damage to the ship’s defenses and results in mechanical engineer Jim Preston awakening ninety years too soon. Alone except for the android bartender Arthur, Jim becomes despondent and considers ending his life until he discovers Aurora Lane, a woman in hibernation who captures his heart after he watches her video profile.
He considers bringing her back to life for companionship, but struggles with the knowledge that it goes against moral principles and interferes with her intended life on their destination planet. Despite his hesitation, he eventually wakes her up and makes her believe it was a malfunction. He instructs Arthur to keep this a secret. Aurora, devastated by the thought of living out her life on the ship, attempts to go back into hibernation but is unsuccessful. Eventually, she accepts her situation and begins writing about her experience as a writer and journalist. As time passes, the two of them develop feelings for each other and fall in love.
